The History of the Ryder Cup – A Tradition of Golf and True Sportsmanship

In the history of golf, the has played a major role for over seventy years. Each year golf enthusiasts flock to the Ryder Cup, which has been hosted by a variety of countries, courses and climates, and every year they are rewarded with some of the most exciting and memorable matches. In order to understand the meaning and intensity of the Ryder Cup one must understand the rich traditions and evolutions that have taken place over the years for both the American and European teams.

Samuel Ryder: The Birth of the Ryder Cup Matches

There is debate among golf historians about exactly how the Ryder Cup began. Some claim the original idea was first developed in 1920 and the first unofficial matches played in 1921. What can be corroborated is the unofficial match of qualifying rounds that were called for just prior to the 1926 Open Golf Championship. The Americans formed a team to play against British professionals at Wentworth. As the Americans were defeated, Samuel Ryder, an Englishman and entrepreneur from St. Albans in Herfordshire, was in attendance.

In 1906 Ryder was elected mayor of St. Albans and his health suffered from working too much. Fresh air and light exercise were recommended to improve his health and it was suggested he take up golf. Later, after becoming an avid fan of the sport, Ryder employed Abe Mitchell as his instructor. Mitchell was considered one of Great Britain’s finest players and Ryder enjoyed watching the British team, which included Mitchell, defeat the Americans in the unofficial 1926 match. When it was suggested an official match be created, Samuel Ryder agreed to donate a solid gold trophy. He insisted that the figure on the cup resemble Mitchell. The inaugural Ryder Cup was planned for June 3-4, 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. Ryder lived to see two Ryder Cup matches on his own soil and in 1936 he died. He was buried with his favorite mashie 5 iron

The Beginning of a Time Honored Golf Tradition

The Americans won the first inaugural match of the Ryder Cup. The team was captained by Walter Hagen and included Johnny Farrell, Johnny Golden, Gene Sarazen, Leo Diegel, Joe Turnesa, Bill Mehlhorn and Al Watrous. Americans dominated the Ryder Cup for 70 years with few exceptions, like the 1969 match, which ended in a 16-16 tie at Royal Birkdale and is considered one of the most memorable Ryder Cup matches ever played. In 1979 a major change occurred and players from the European continent began to compete for what would now be the European team instead of the British team. The American team won in 1979, 1981 and 1983, but the matches became more competitive as the European team had the opportunity to bring in new blood. In 1985 the European team won at the Belfry and then again at Muirfield Village. It was the first consecutive European win and the first on American soil.

Unforgettable Golf and Unforgettable Memories

The humble start of the Ryder Cup was inspired by a man’s love of golf and this tradition continues today. The Ryder Cup has spanned over 77 years and 34 competitions. In 1989, as media coverage increased the Ryder Cup increased its popularity. Americans watched Irish player Christy O’Connor win against Fred Couples. In 1991 Americans reclaimed the Ryder Cup with a victory in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Then in 1993 the Americans won another close match at The Belfry.

In 1995 the Europeans made a comeback at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York and they continued this winning streak in 1997 at the Valderamma Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain. In 1999 the Americans made one of the greatest comebacks ever when after a seemingly impossible 10-6 deficit the Americans defeated the European team anyway. Recently, the European team has achieved victory in the 2004 match at Oakland Hills and in 2006 at the K-Club in Ireland. The pressure is now on the Americans to reclaim the trophy at the September 2008 Ryder Cup hosted by the Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Once Upon A Time

Chapter One of “The One” Misconception: My Wild Assumptions, Proposed Questions, and Love for Understanding Women.

A beautiful ballroom filled with champagne and dancing (you are too young at this point to really know what champagne is but nonetheless it is there). Your gown is exquisite with white glimmer and purple roses. The air smells like a fresh bakery of goods. Everyone is laughing, loving, and living to the fullest.

A prince walks into the room – both strapping and poised. His confidence alone takes your breathe away like a blow to the stomach. The butterflies fill the room because they can no long stay trapped inside your body. He walks down the stairs and people open like the Red Sea to make way for greatest. To your surprise, his eyes interlock with yours with a sense of urgency, as if you are everything that he was looking for in a women. He steps closer, and closer, and closer.

You begin to sweat as you look up at the clock above – 11:59pm it reads. As his lips approach your own, the clock strikes 12:00am and suddenly everything turns to dust.

All that I can say is welcome to reality. The example that I have just presented to you is a personification of the situation that surrounds the world. We get so close to the fairytale ending that we truly believe it does exist. For a moment in time, the world stands still and the true meaning of life is exposed – love. But like the ending shows, there is always a reality. And that reality is time.

But can that ever be fixed? Can we ever have the ending in real life with the one?

I do think that it is possible because life is just a set of different perceptions. On the note, I believe that the perceptions are sometimes too complex to sift through. But let us start at the beginning and work up to the final question proposed for, “Once Upon A Time.”

Beginning as children, we become part of the Disney generation – what a great marketing scheme they have going there. Every generation will grow up into fairy tale, truly believing that princes and princesses do exist.

In particular though, as children we are bred to dream the unthinkable. At that point in time, we do not know what reality entails because we are sheltered everyday of our lives.

Q: Do you not think that we are all setting ourselves up for failure?

I am not saying that society should hex Disney for believing in the magic of a beautiful world, but it seems that society is consistently setting itself up for failure at a young age. Adults already know that life is not a bed of roses, but yet they expose children to the idea that it is everyday.

This brings me to timing and relationships. As children, whether a boy or girl, we see the fantasy world of fairy tale relationships and pretend to by apart of it. Even though most boys think that girls have “cooties”, they are more kind and passionate than ever. At that point in time, they are not thinking about sexual relationships, but rather platonic. Girls are exposed as beautiful, pretty, and elegant – as I believe they always should be. Girls are looked at in a different light from a boys perceptive because boys have yet been exposed to the crap that surrounds the world.

Over time, I believe that it is the males that lose the mindset of perceiving women as princesses – and females just adapt and adjust accordingly. When it comes down to it, women want to make a man happy and therefore sacrifice the storybook fairytale ending to survive.

The timing is just off. As stupid and weird as this sounds, here me out ladies. If we got married at the age of five when fairy tales were apart of our lives, that would be the life that you always wished. As a male species, we would be able to give you the prince that you always desired because we are uncorrupted at that point in time.

Q: Would you agree that men change and women conform to the attitudes of men as the grow?

I know that it is much more complex then that though. Time continues to move. I have always wished that life would be more like a movie – where we just repeated scenes and never have to walk out of the movie theater and back into reality. But the reality sucks that after the final kiss, we still have years and years to continuous relationship. What happens to Cinderella and the Prince after the final kiss and the curtains close? We will never know and that is the point. He probably has an affair and she probably becomes a drug addict, but those are things that we shield ourselves from at a young age.

So Once Upon A Time really becomes Once Upon Continuous Times, where a moment of love really is struck with the realities of moments in battle with time. When we are passionate, compassionate, and inspired for true love, the timing is just wrong. We are too young.

When the time does come for marriage, it seems that we are never in the right mindset.

But like I said before, I truly believe that the problem lies in the male. More than relationships, many of the worlds problems fall to the ignorance and arrogance of men. The reason for this is because we lack the secret ingredients that women possess – nurture, human compassion, and care. In Once Upon A Time land, we possess these traits as men. But like I have proclaimed, over time, our “mocho” mindset withers these traits or passes the burden onto women. We make decisions that are irrational, self-destructive, and degrading to the human race – mostly because of money, power, status, and image. It is the women that are always looking to express love lost in the world.

Don’t get me wrong, not all men are like this, but what I am trying to get across is that, as men, we are not naturally “mocho”. I think that is a trait that is embedded in society and recirculated through generations. Otherwise, we would be irrational, self-destructive, and degrading to the human race at the age of five. But instead we are princes to your imagination.

I think because I have been surrounded by women all of my life, I see this personality transformation take place – I was on this track for it as well. But then I realized, to some capacity, why women do what they do. For example, rolls around and women put on as little as possible, parade the beach, and enter booty shaking contests – they are bred for sex appeal. Once Upon A Time, the sex appeal was long, elegant white glimmering dresses, flowers, and flirting conversation. That is what made them feel wanted and special. As men change, women still desire to look for love and satisfaction of male desire, so what do they do? They shake it onstage at a beach in Cabo.

There are always outliers, and I am sure that some women just naturally love to have sex appeal for self-confidence. But that does not mean that we, as men, have not integrated that mindset into your everyday thought. If only we stayed in Once Upon A Time land.

Q: If women ruled the world, do you think that sex appeal would be different? More than that, do you think that many aspects of the human race would change?

The final question that I have been working up to is now upon us — it allows for multiple answers and gossip amongst you ladies.

Q: What do you think needs to happen for fairytale endings to occur?

Jets Schedule Updated After Historic NFL Lockout

The NFL has arrived for the 2011-2012 season and football has never been more fun. The , part of the (AFC) are one of three teams that New Yorkers claim each year. And this year schedule is going to make for some great football. The Schedule kicks off with a Monday night football game against the Houston Texans and includes one other Monday night game.

Founded in 1959, the NY Jets were originally called the Titans of New York and officially became the Jets in 1963. The Jets schedule is crafted each year to allow them to share their home-field (New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey) with the – theirs is the only arrangement like it in the NFL. Each team owns 50 percent of the stadium. Did you know that while they are officially called the New York Jets, the team actually plays its games in New Jersey! The same is true of the and their shared field. The team once called Shea stadium its home field.

Even though the team has not won a Super Bowl since 1968, Jets tickets are hard to come by. Each and every New Yorker has their team and the Jets are a fan favorite. Fans will notice the Jets schedule 2011 will not be an easy one. Regular season for the team starts out with a match-up against the Dallas Cowboys and the team will meet up with both of NY’s other teams – the NY Giants and the Buffalo Bills.

Additionally, the Jets schedule includes a game against the , their long-time division rival. This rivalry has roots dating back to a playoff game in 1966, where the Jets beat the Pats and took them out of the running for appearing in the first Super Bowl. This season, the NY Jets schedule includes a match-up with the New England Patriots in New England. This game will be in week five so it may not be a deciding factor in how the season plays out but for fans it is an important game.

The rest of the Jets schedule may not be an easy one. The team faces the Baltimore Ravens, the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders in away games and the , the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers at home. The Jets also have a rivalry with the Miami Dolphins so each season fans look forward to the match-up between these two.

It is not often in the Jets schedule that they play the New York Giants (after all they do share a home field) however, this year the teams will meet up twice. One game will be played in preseason with the Jets acting as the away team and the other game will not come to fruition until week 15 when the Jets get to act as the home team. The 2011-2012 season will be one Jets fans will not soon forget.

Depressed Rabbit Attempts Suicide

A male rabbit named Furball had lost all hope. The female rabbit he had lived with for an entire year had left him for another rabbit. The owner of the garden he usually dined at had just put a fence around it. A fox had nipped one of his ears. And, at his most depressed, it seemed to him that all life is mere ephemera in the eye of time.

The only thing to do was bring an end to his sorrow, hunger, pain, and inability to find meaning even in a moment. He would take his own life. The question became, how?

The first thing he did is look for a cliff to jump off of, but, alas, he lived on farmland that was pretty flat. He did find one high rock beside the pond the cows waded into each day. Up he scampered.

The challenge was to jump and hit the ground, not the pond. He resolved to end his troubled existence and off he leaped. But when he hit the ground, unfortunately, he landed on his feet. He just stood there, regretting the rock wasn’t higher.

Next, he decided to back up and run at the rock as fast as he could, head first. He hopped back far enough to give himself a good running distance and then headed for the hard immensity. He banged into at full speed and knew nothing else, because the force knocked him out.

As luck would have it, after a while, he woke up, with a thundering headache. He rubbed his aching head with his paw and decided to drown himself. He leapt toward the pond and did a belly smacker. He waited to drown. The terrible thing is, he couldn’t stop swimming. Much as he tried, there was a reflex in him that he couldn’t control. So, filled with regret, along with water that had splashed into his mouth, he paddled out and sat down by the bank to dry off.

He thought about human beings and how many ways they had to commit suicide. Why didn’t rabbits have even one? In fact, why didn’t he ever hear of a rabbit, or any other animal, committing suicide?

No, it seemed that only humans knew how to do that. What was wrong with other animals? he wondered. He signed, realizing there were just no examples in the rabbit world or the entire animal kingdom he could follow.

He felt more miserable than ever and his vision blurred, because tears welled up in his eyes. He tried to wipe them away but his paw was still wet, so the clumpy fur only irritated them and made him blink. Oh, how hopeless his life was! He could see no reason to go on. Nothing good, he was certain, would ever happen to him.

But just then something good did happen. An exceptionally cute female rabbit hopped around the corner of the rock. He saw her and just the site of her made his sullen spirits leap up.

She hopped over to him, and said, “You look very sad. What’s wrong?”

“I want to kill myself but I don’t know how,” he confessed.

“Now, why would a handsome rabbit like you want to kill himself?” she asked.

“Because nothing is going right. My girl friend left me. My favorite garden has been fenced off. A fox bit my ear. And I feel insignificant.”

He leaned forward to show her the bite mark.

“My, oh, my,” she said. “Let me lick it.”

“You’d do that for me?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said. “If a fox bit my ear, I’d want somebody to lick it for me.”

“OK,” he said, “but take it easy. It hurts a lot.”

So the female rabbit licked his ear. He felt good.

“What’s your name?” she asked.

“Furball.”

“I like that,” she said. “Very cute.”

“What’s yours?” he asked.

“Sweet Thing.”

“Me?” he wanted to know.

“Yes, you’re very sweet,” she told him. “But that’s also my name.”

“Oh,” he said, and tested it with is own lips. “Sweet Thing. I like that.

“Good,” she said. “And I like the way you taste.”

“You do?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Great,” he exclaimed, and continued to enjoy her soothing licks. He couldn’t believe it, but what felt like a new life was swirling all through is body.

“How’s that?” she asked, finishing her TLC of his ear.

“Much better,” he told her.

“You know,” she said, sitting down beside him, “I live by a great garden. There’s no fence, and you’re welcome to come there and eat.”

“I am?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Don’t you have a male rabbit who loves you?”

“No,” she said, “he left me for another rabbit.”

“I’m sorry,” Furball said.

“Don’t worry,” I’ll get over it,” Sweet Thing sort of sighed. “But I wish I could meet another male rabbit, one I really like.”

By now our suicidal rabbit was thinking, Hey, who would have believed it just a few minutes ago? My life just might work out! And, even if life is just ephemera in the eye of time, I might be able to fit in enough happiness to be glad I’m alive.

“How about me?” he asked.

“Well, I like you a lot, but I’m not sure I could be happy with a rabbit who is so depressed he would take his own life.”

“Oh, I’m all over that now,” he told her. “And, if you were my girl friend, I’d be all over it forever.” “You would?”

“Yes,” he said, and snuggled up to her. “I’d have so much to live for!”

“Wow,” she said, “and so would I. Would you like to come to my garden and eat something?”

“Love it,” he told her.

“Great. Then off we go!” she replied.

And so off they hopped, to live happily ever after.

Bye-Bye, Bye

Ed Hochuli
by hawaii

Bye weeks are a thing of the past in NFL Betting starting in Week 11 as there will be a full 16-game card this week for the first time since all the way back in Week Three.

NFL betting kicks off Thursday with an interesting battle of teams off SU wins. Chicago waxed Minnesota at home last week while Miami did the same to Tennessee, but at a costly price as both QB’s Henne and Pennington were lost for the season. However, they are still favored by 1.5 points on the betting line as Tyler Thigpen (you remember him from KC) gets the start for a Dolphins team that is 1-3 SU/ATS at home.

Sunday has several marquee games. One is Green Bay at Minnesota as Rodgers and the Packers look to put the final nail in ‘s coffin. Green Bay is off its bye week and is favored by three on the road. Note that the Vikings did outgain the Pack in a Week 7 loss at Lambeau.

The best 4:00 et game is New England at Indianapolis in a renewal of the old vs. rivalry. The total for this matchup is very high at 50.5 points while the Colts are favored by three. This will be the 11th time since 2003 that these two AFC powers have met with Indy winning five of the last six after losing the previous four. Perhaps you’ll remember last year’s wild 35-34 game where Patriots head coach decided to go for it on a 4th and 2 from his own 21 yard line with only a few minutes remaining! His team didn’t make it, allowing Manning and company a short field, which they used to score the game winning touchdown.

Sunday night brings an excellent showdown in the NFC East with the Giants meeting the Eagles. What a comeback it has been for Philly QB Vick, who had over 400 total yards and six touchdowns in a 59-28 win over Washington Monday night. His team has opened up as three-point favorites. Note that the G-Men have gone Over in four straight games, while the Eagles have done the same five straight times.

The Monday night game is a so-so matchup with the Broncos at the Chargers. San Diego, off its bye week, is a prohibitive 9.5-point favorite. Grey’s Anatomy and the Death Card

Blame it on LOST. The ABC show set the precedent of killing a major character every sweeps period and the result was pure ratings gold. LOST managed to dominate every sweeps period by keeping fans guessing which of their most beloved characters would be biting the dust. For a while, the formula rapidly proliferated through other prime time shows, until it nearly became a requirement for a prime time drama, one that pricey lead actors were none-too-fond of.

As you might imagine, like any good side-show attraction, it eventually lost its gravity and became passé. Tension was replaced with groans. NBC’s fledgling serial ‘Heroes’ made it part of its formula from the get-go, managing to draw almost universal scolding from fans and a media that had grown weary of the trick. So why, then was it so successful for Grey’s Anatomy? February 16th was one of the biggest days in the history of Grey’s Anatomy’s ratings. Grey’s Anatomy played the tired death card and found success never before equaled. What did Grey’s Anatomy do so differently in summoning the reaper that brought it such success? Something which is likely not to be repeated: it killed its lead character.

Killing ‘a’ lead character is one thing, but when you dispatch the character for which your show is named, you invite all sorts of controversy. No, retroactively you wouldn’t expect this to impact the ratings, but Grey’s Anatomy producers and writers are smarter than the average bear. It would seem that Grey’s Anatomy producers created a controlled leak of information that their lead character, Dr. Meredith Grey, was going to bite the dust. This is where the side-show analogy comes full circle.

Grey’s Anatomy fans around the world buzzed that it just wasn’t possible despite the powerful rumors that the Grey’s production staff would even consider killing off the character that the show was named for. It seemed to horrible to be wrong. Heavy hearted Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere braced for the worst.

In the end, it was Meredith who died, which was in a way one of the biggest payoffs ever of this tired old device. Grey’s Anatomy producers put their necks on the line and pulled off the impossible, they killed their lead star. But there was a catch. They crafted a death for Meredith which left room for a rather obvious resuscitation. Many in the media, fans included, were left to decry the move as one that could have devastating impact on the credibility of the show. A prime example, Buddytv’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy: So, Who Died?’ which decried the death as a shameless gimmick from the get go.

So while the death of Meredith Grey, the namesake of Grey’s Anatomy, was shocking and brought huge ratings, will the subsequent resurrection do the same? More? Or will it repel Grey’s fans tired of being dealt the death card? As of this writing, Grey’s Anatomy is three days away from answering that question, and if the internet buzz is any indication, death is alive and well.
