Question by jedisaurus: Being Human?
Are humans the only ones that: think, have emotions, feel pain, love, are concious, know what death is? If so, then why do animals behave as if they do have these attributes (they don’t like getting mauled/hunted, and have very similar behavior to us, just suited to their specific species)?

no i think animals have all of that!!!
animals are not as aware as humans are.
No single, essential difference separates human beings from animals.
the difference is that we, as humans, have foresight, which animals do not have. Yes we share behaviors with animals, however that only shows that we both have instincts.
It is true that animals have emotions. They birth young ones, take care of their families, protect themselves. The difference is that we as humans are the most dominant species and while animals have similar emotions they don’t carry it to the depth that a human does.
being animal, actually.
In considering the range that other species may possess for the abilities you listed, the human species depends more than any on the ability to think rationally by virtue of a unique conceptual process.
The essential characteristic that distinguishes humans from other species is the potential of our ability to reason. This ability brings with it many new options and requirements. Ever since we took to understanding and controlling fire we have gained more and more power and with that the need to act responsibly. What follows very quickly from the benefits of technology is a dependence upon those benefits and the need to use them wisely. The need to educate their young increases proportionately to the intelligence a given species possesses and requires.
The options provided to us through our greater understanding of how the world works and our relationship to it and each other requires the development and use of a philosophical system for making choices. Humans are probably the only species that can routinely make a conscious choice between life and death. For this reason we must carefully design and use a philosophy that will promote our survival and long term well-being.
Due to the success of our species and the impact we have on other species and the Earth we all share, we have a responsibility to consider how our presence impacts these other life forms. Our abilities to gather and apply knowledge in ways otherwise not available give us the means to enter into unique varieties of mutually beneficial relationships. The joy we derive for interacting with the varieties of life forms that exist, the knowledge we gain from this and the material benefits they provide us with more than justifies the care we can provide to them.

The penance for being human is understanding: and the vehicle for understanding is language. Through what is spoken and what is written we know what has gone before of which we were not and this is not a source of unhappiness (unless we broach teh subject of sanity). However because we know that things have gone before we can see that things will follow, of which we will also not be and this seems like a loss even though it has not and never can be, raelised. The penance for being human is the understanding of the brevity of life, but this understanding is also the reward for being human – it gives essence and urgency to what we do: I will glqdly do the penance to have the reward.
