Tedashii

“I wanted to do college ministry…being a part of Christian Hip Hop was never the plan,” he reveals. While Tedashii’s robust stature and delivery on the mic catch the attention of most, his gentle spirit hints at an even deeper story behind the man and the music. Born in East Texas, Tedashii “TDot” Anderson was raised to be very family-oriented, respectful and appreciative, but embracing the latter was often difficult in light of the economic conditions his family faced. Television became an escape for him as he admits to wanting a different life, “I really wanted to get away,” Tedashii recalls. He envied the Huxtable lifestyle and eloquence and desired the urbanized southern version, topped off with a candy-painted car on 26's. His ambitions would soon mirror those he stayed up watching on television and read about in books. In high school, he joined the band to play jazz, studied black history, reveled in poetry, endeavored to become a renaissance man, and even idolized Ted Kopple. Tedashii remembers being different than his peers in his vast interests, but as expected for a Texas boy, Samoan at that, he also played football. By most standards, he was a well-rounded, good person–most, but not all. Tedashii was given a wake-up call in college after being confronted by a student who overheard him using profanity. “He told me that I was a sinner and basically shared the Gospel with me that day.” Some time later, after going to a Christian event on campus and seeing hundreds of urban students authentically worship God, he received Jesus and found new life in Christ instead of Hollywood. His newfound family in Christ encouraged him to use his rapping skills, honed since being challenged to freestyle in high school, to glorify God. And while his first attempt to do so wasn’t well-received, he was recognized as “different” by his peers again, but now it was because of his faith. After being introduced to Lecrae, rooming with both him and Sho Baraka and later being featured on several tracks from Real Talkand the 116 Clique Compilation, Tedashii was exhorted to commit to ministry through music. “I wanted to do college ministry…being a part of Christian Hip Hop was never the plan,” he reveals. But with encouragement from his peers, along with releasing his debut album Kingdom People and recognizing his ability to reach people with his raw, southern style, he has since needed no motivation to continue spitting the Gospel. With Identity Crisis, Tedashiii shared his past identity struggles, the fountain of his new identity, and challenged listeners to find theirs in Christ alone. His sophomore album charted No. 2 on the Gospel Billboard chart and No. 9 on the Christian Billboard chart, solidifying the appeal of a unique artist who is unashamedly Christian and soulfully Hip Hop. Since his last release, Tedashii has blazed several tracks as a feature artist, and is gearing up to release his third album this spring. He has also been serving at The Village Church in Denton, TX and raising his son with his lovely wife. Far from his childhood dreams, if he had things his way, being known as someone who lived and even died for Christ would be the perfect ending to his life story.

KB

“Somehow I knew I wasn’t right with God, despite my family telling me that I was good. I knew I wasn’t… and the idea of meeting God was unbearable.” Kevin Burgess was born in St. Petersburg, FL and raised in Southern Illinois. His parents divorced when he was 8 years old, and that meant big changes for he and his mother. “I went from the suburbs to the hood in one day”, KB stated about the changes that took place after his parents split. At the fragile age of 16 he was invited to participate in a unique school program, an experience that uncovered a painful reality for KB. “Somehow I knew I wasn’t right with God, despite my family telling me that I was good. I knew I wasn’t. I knew I was sinning and the idea of meeting God was unbearable. It was eating me alive.” He struggled through the first semester of the program, failed a few classes, and watched expulsion from the program draw near. He had an internal war surging in his mind, and spirit, and the culture he grew up around said that expressing emotions was anti-manly. So he kept the war a secret, and it turned into depression and thoughts of suicide. During the second semester KB met Jeremy, a Christian who introduced him to Christian rap. He took a cd home and loved every track he heard. “The music was such good quality. I used to love ignorant, trap music that was good quality, and this was equally as good but answering questions.” Answers in hand, and full of a new found hope KB accepted Jesus as his savior and boy has his life changed. After high school KB enrolled in Bible College and befriended a group of Christian rappers. Together they formed His Glory Alone (HGA). Over time HGA accumulated a steady following consisting of Lecrae, Ben Washer, and DJ Official. He was invited onto the “Acquire the Fire” tour by Lecrae, and asked to join the Reach Records team just a few months later. KB released his mixtape in 2011 titled “Who is KB”, which garnered over 30K downloads. He has been featured on many Reach artist’s projects including: Lecrae Rehab ( I Used to Do it Too), Man Up, PRo (Dying to Live), and Trip Lee The Good Life (One Sixteen). KB resides in Tampa, FL with his wife where he indulges in crab legs, boxing, heading up HGA, and serving at Living Faith Bible Fellowship Church. “Right now I am learning to steward and shepherd my platform as a rapper. “ His idea of success is wrapped up in the act of obedience. He says that “being faithful and obedient to what God has asked of you whether in Beverly Hills or Ethiopia” determines success. KB hopes that his role on the Reach Records team will be that of a leading thinker. “I want to be someone people can look up to and trust as a deliverer of truth. “If I can accomplish that, I will have been successful.”

With five albums under his belt, Klein now performs either solo, duo, or with his band, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires. Formed in summer 2011 with local ace musicians Steve Abercrombie (bass), Chris Cason (electric guitar) and Bronson Tew (drums), the band’s first album together, Sky Blue DeVille, was recently released in April 2013.

Klein’s music has garnered praise from Paste, No Depression, Georgia Music, Sing Out!, Flagpole, Stomp & Stammer, Maverick, and Connect Savannah Magazines, as well as on numerous Americana blogs worldwide (Americana UK, Roots Highway, CtrlAltCountry, etc.). Klein has performed throughout the U.S. and toured in the UK, Ireland, and The Netherlands, and has shared the stage with a diverse range of acts including Josh Ritter, Kevn Kinney, Okkervil River, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet featuring Bela Fleck, Shawn Mullins, Robert Ellis, Joe Pug, Steep Canyon Rangers, Eilen Jewell, Shovels & Rope, Jonathan Byrd, Caroline Herring, Jim White, Fred Eaglesmith, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, Andrew Combs,American Aquarium, Bill Mallonee, Eef Barzelay, and more.
In 2012 Klein released his first ‘world music’ record, the original Malian Mande collection Dugu Wolo. An associated making-of-the-record documentary film is in the works. Klein is the founder of upstart independent label Cowboy Angel Music and co-founder of the annual Twilight Americana Music Festival in Athens, Georgia.

Sky Blue DeVille represents yet another step forward for Klein’s versatile songwriting as he continues to explore and expand upon sounds rooted in his exciting brand of Americana and folk.

“Calls to mind Memphis soul, Elvis Presley, great songwriters like Steve Forbert and Willie Nile, and good old-fashioned American folk. It’s clear that Adam Klein is the real thing and his new record is spot on.”- Michael Verity’s Americana Minute

“… nine songs of clean, winsome but lonely Americana and country soul… Sky Blue DeVille, at its most tender and honest, reflects the calm genius of Lyle Lovett’s Pontiac.”- Andre Gallant, Athens Banner Herald more >>> The Honeycutters are, at the heart, the musical collaboration of singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt and Lead Guitarist/ Producer Peter James. While their sound has drawn comparisons to such artists as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Platt and James produce a refreshingly unique blend of Americana music that is comfortingly familiar while being entirely original. Whether performing as an acoustic duo or a full fledged Honky-Tonk five piece, The Honeycutters leave smiles on the faces of the ears that they catch.

Their most recent release, When Bitter Met Sweet (2012), hit #21 on the Americana Chart, and landed at #94 for the year. It was also one of the top ten best selling albums at Merlefest in 2012. The record came in at #4 in WNCW’s listener voted top 100, and #2 in the regional favorites (right behind The Avett Brothers).

Their first full length studio release Irene (May ’09) was recorded at Asheville’s own Collapseable Studio, and mixed by Grammy Award winning sound engineer David Fergason (Nashville TN) . The album has garnered radio support across the USA as well as overseas, and landed them in Iaan Hughes’ (No Depression Podcast) top twenty of 2009, Fret Knot Radio Hour’s “Nine to Know from ’09?, and as number 32 in WNCW’s listener voted top 100.

Amanda Anne Platt has been hailed as “one of the best songwriters coming out of WNC these days” by WNCW programming director Martin Anderson, and her voice has been described as “perfectly unadorned” and “recklessly beautiful”. Her song, “Little Bird,” won second place in the general category of the Chris Austin Songwriting contest in 2011. Her lyrics are as catchy and heartbreaking as her melodies. Dane Smith of Asheville NC’s Mountain Xpress writes “Her songs make you sad…in a good way!” In both her simple composition and honest delivery it’s easy to hear the influence of country legends such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, or Loretta Lynn, and with this Miss Platt credits growing up listening to her Father’s extensive record collection every Saturday morning. Despite her love for classic country, she cites Bruce Springstein and Tom Petty as major influences and her songwriting carries a wit and an edge that plants her firmly in her generation.

Peter James is rapidly becoming one of Western North Carolina’s most sought after guitar players, known for both insightful solos and tasteful accompaniment. Having first held a guitar at age thirteen, he quickly started making up for lost time by delving completely into the instrument. His natural talent and attention to detail made him an asset to The Slant Six Cowboys, a New Hampshire based group founded by James and singer/songwriter Don Witcher out of their long time musical collaboration. In 2004 they released a self-titled album on 95 North records which reached number 14 on the AMA chart. Since moving to Asheville in 2006 James has played right-hand man to several of the region’s top acts, including Taylor Martin and Brian McGee.

Like so many of country music’s great duos, Platt and James have a musical chemistry that can be felt throughout the songs they play, from the sounds of their guitars to their vocal harmonies. Perhaps this is why they are frequently mentioned along with the movement to “Take country music back to it’s roots”. The Honeycutters are just doing what they know how to do: making music that feels as good to hear as it does to play. Their original brand of Americana has proven equally appealing to both the musician and the music lover, the country and the city, and the old and the young.

Tal Taylor on mandolin, Rick Cooper on bass, and Josh Milligan on drums round out Platt’s songs and create a sound that carries just as well across the bar room as the acoustic duo does in a church or a music hall.

Since the release of their first studio album, The Honeycutters have shared the stage with such Americana giants as Guy Clark, Tony Rice, The Seldom Scene, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Donna The Buffalo, Jill Andrews, and The Steep Canyon Rangers. They have been voted Western North Carolina’s favorite local Americana act (2011 Mountain Xpress reader’s poll) and delighted audiences from upstate New York to Seattle, Washington. They are currently planning a fundraiser for the production of their third full length studio album. more >>> It all starts with that High Lonesome sound and then keeps getting higher and lonesom-er till your left asking "What just happened?!" While deeply rooted in the traditions of Bill Monroe, Flat & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers and Jimmy Martin, the BorderHop Trio is not afraid to push the boundaries of and good taste. more >>> From the side porch of an old gristmill to the main stage of The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, BlueBilly Grit has quickly become a force in Bluegrass and Americana. Their modern style, which blends Bluegrass and Americana music, has a way of appealing to the newer generation of the grassroots movement, and by those that have a love for the more traditional sound. Their unrivaled three part harmony, traditional instrumentation, and the lead vocals of their soulful female singer are what make this magical blend work. In February of 2011, an original song written and recorded about the old gristmill was shipped to 800 radio stations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. The song was released on a compilation CD along with songs from Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Steve Martin, and The Grascals. BlueBilly Grit also won the 2012 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition. BlueBilly Grit has done several radio and TV spots this past year, including "Nuts and Bolts of Fishing" which aired on Turner Sports South and the "Moby in the Morning Show," a nationally syndicated radio show based in Atlanta. BlueBilly Grit recently released their second album, “Ready For A Change,” and the group is currently in the studio working on a third album, and a live video performance. Amidst much uncertainty in the musical world of today, BlueBilly Grit seems to be holding their course, and humbly admits that a source greater than themselves appears to be calling the shots. BlueBilly Grit takes pride in the fact that they’re not just another “hot lick, blazing solo” bluegrass band. It’s all about the song with this group, and rightly so because they have something to say! more >>> String Theory (Athens, GA) plays old time, bluegrass and Americana
music and is made up of some of Athens finest acoustic musicians. The
music is high energy and refuses to let the audience sit back and
simply listen: they have to move, dance or even just tap their feet.
The lineup includes Tommy Jordan (guitar, ban…jo, vocals), Dick
Daniels (mandolin, guitar, bass, vocals), Antoon Speters (banjo,
vocals), Susan Staley (guitar, vocals), Dale Wechsler (fiddle) and Ben
Jordan (acoustic and electric bass). Their CD "All Wound Up" is
available from CDBaby, iTunes and Athensmusic.net. more >>> When legends come to mind there is one star that shines above them all that is none other than the legendary icon Dr. Ralph Stanley.

For over 6 decades he has become one of the most influential artists of all time. Born in 1927 in Big Spraddle VA, Ralph Stanley was the second child of Lucy Jane and Lee Stanley. In 1946 along with his older brother Carter Stanley they formed the legendary Stanley Brothers duo. The Stanley BrothersTheir catalog of songs include “Angel Band”, "Rank Strangers”, “Little Maggie” and the famed “Man Of Constant Sorrow”. Tragedy struck the Stanley Brothers on December 1st 1966 with the untimely passing of 41 year old Carter Stanley. Some of Country and Bluegrass music’s biggest stars came from Ralph Stanley’s band, including Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks and the late Keith Whitley. In 1976 Ralph received a honorary doctorate of music from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. In 1984 Recipient of the “National Heritage Award” given by President Ronald Reagan. What They Are Saying About Ralph Stanley
Vanity Fair
“A bluegrass diety. . . . Stanley has one of the most expressive voices in the history of American song, a craggy tenor equally adept at praising the Lord and expressing heartbreak.”

Garrison Keillor
“Ralph Stanley is like an uncle to us and now that all my uncles are gone, Ralph's singing is even more precious. This album [A Distant Land To Roam] of classic folk songs is one of his best.”

Rolling Stone
“A master performer without an expiration date. . . .”

David Gates, senior editor, Newsweek
“A Distant Land to Roam is indispensable: [Here is] the foremost interpreter of traditional country music singing some of the great canonical songs. . . . [This is] one of his most moving recordings."

Rolling Stone
“The most dangerous seventy-eight-year-old in the biz . . . Ralph Stanley continues to rule American mountain music, playing the bluest grass with the baddest ass.”

NPR’s “Fresh Air”
“. . . easily the most eminent bluegrass singer in the world.”

Los Angeles Times
“. . . a cultural treasure. . . .”

Jon Weisberger, contributing editor, No Depression"
With Distant Land To Roam, Ralph Stanley returns to the Clinch Mountains–his home, and that of the Carter Family–and to the signature sound that has served him so well for almost 60 years. Ralph's stirring, mournful voice is a perfect match for the Carter Family's songs, Mike Seeger's autoharp and James Alan Shelton's "Carter lick" guitar act as wonderful bridges between the past and present, and it is great to hear The Clinch Mountain Boys behind the master once again.

Denver Post
“Then there was Stanley, today’s Elvis of traditional music. With his hands casually clasped at his waist, he filled the theater with his plaintive plea against dying, ‘O Death,’ whose solemn lyrics he magically makes uplifting.”

Chicago Tribune
“The timeless air has always been present in the voice of Ralph Stanley. . . . There was nothing high, lonesome or mournful about his tone. Instead, he embodied the protagonist in an ancient murder ballad. His voice was sharp, scolding, vengeful, and it’s why this music cuts so deep. . . ”

Chicago Sun Times
“. . . Ralph Stanley is undeniably the most important figure in bluegrass music today.”

Philadelphia Inquirer
“And then there was Stanley, who began his set singing ‘O Death’ solo and ended it by leading the entire cast – and the enthralled crowd – in a goosebumps-raising ‘Amazing Grace.’ In a voice raspy but firm, the 74-year old pioneer did nothing fancy with ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ or the rousing ‘Angel Band.’ He just gave his plainspoken all, moving the air in the room like a man who can’t shake sorrow but still yearns for the light.” more >>> Sometime around 2009, somewhere around Athens, GA a handful of like-minded guys with string instruments started playing together. After picking around a fire in the winter and in a small tool shed in the spring, High Strung String Band was born, and soon began venturing out and playing live shows. Building a repertoire that mixes folk-grass originals with traditional numbers, the band has started to gain a reputation for delivering a high-energy show that gets people moving.

The band is reluctant to be identified solely as a traditional bluegrass band. But with a cast of usual suspects such as banjo, mandolin, upright bass and guitar it's hard to not call it bluegrass. What is indeed different about this five-piece is the addition of lap steel guitar. It's lonesome, Americana-tinged sound adds a new dimension to a familiar genre and a distinct element to the band's original songs.

In the spring of 2010 the band went into Olive Street Studios with engineer Shannon Pengelly to begin work on an album of original music, and released their self-titled EP in June 2010. Recently, they have been bringing their unique brand of bluegrass to audiences across north Georgia. High Strung String Band plays music for music's sake and enjoys all the fun that comes with it –meeting new people, seeing new places, and encouraging folks to have a good time. Checking out one of their lively shows promises good, clean fun…only dirtier and with more dancing. more >>> It all started in Athens, Georgia in 2001 during a most peculiar spell when 5 or 6bluegrass bands circulated the town. The famous Athens, which had once spawned the B-52s, REM, Widespread Panic, and countless other indie, pop and punk acts, was now the home to a competing minority of bluegrass players. The Packway Handle Band emerged from this small scene, finding national acclaim first as finalists at the Telluride bluegrass competition in 2002 and 2003, then taking 2nd place in 2004. The band’s 2003 debut album, “Chaff Harvest” was produced using prize awards from a local Battle of the Bands when they beat out 72 other rock bands for first place. PHB was on a roll and has continued to win over fans and rack up awards. In early 2006 the band went on the road full time, wowing audiences across the country with close 4-part harmonies and their dance around two tightly-spaced condenser mics. Packway Handle Band has emerged at the national forefront of bands that use a gather-around-the-mic style. Theirs is not a mission to preserve historical styles– it's just how they do what they do the best. And what they do best is rooted in thought provoking songwriting, clever choice and arrangement of bluegrass traditionals, and totally unexpected (even totally inappropriate) covers, all delivered with a crackling energy. If you get an idea of what Packway Handle is early in a show, you’ll probably change your mind several times before they’re done.

The band now plays upward of 200 shows a year in the and in 2008 Packway embarked on an overseas tour to play the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland as well as a string of other dates throughout the UK, Belgium, Holland, and France. It's obvious their enthusiasm and sense of humor are honest, and that what they do appeals to broad audiences, even those who don't normally listen to bluegrass. You're not going to say you've heard this band before, unless you actually have. Since 2003 the band has released four full length albums and one live EP,the most recent album entitled, "What Are We Gonna Do Now?", was released in February 2010. Currently, the band is compiling live recordings for a Live Album.

"The Packway Handle Band mixes dark themes and old-time religion with a uniquely modern folk aesthetic that pins down just what American music is all about."– Splice Today, Z.N Lupetin

"If you like Chatham County Line and/or The Avett Brothers, then you should catch this perpetually touring five-piece for a trad-absurdist experience delivered from exceptionally seasoned youths." – Flagpole Magazine, David Eduardo

Marcio Rangel, chitarra – Flavio Boltro, tromba
