Frequently Asked Questions

What will the actual race be like?

Just before 1pm on Race Day your team captain will be handed a set of 13 clues.  At 1pm the teams open the clues and the excitement begins!  Clues will vary depending on the city but may include mind puzzles, getting your entire team to a specific landmark or geographic location, completing a unique challenge, and much more.  Your team will need to complete 12 out of the 13 clues and return to the finish line with all team members.  Your time stops as you enter the finish but then your 12 clues will be verified by the XPLORE team before your team receives their official position.  If any of the clues are not correctly answered or executed your position will be forfeited, your time will revert back to the active clock and you will need to return to the race and correctly complete 12 clues before officially finishing.

Post race will be a fun chance to talk with other teams, take advantage of any food or drink specials, and plan your next XPLORE race.  Awards will be handed out to the top teams around 4pm.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Participants age 17 and under will need to be on a team with a responsible adult (18+).  Other than that, we encourage racers of all ages.  Kids 5 and under are free and do not need to register but be aware that all non-registered racers will not receive a race bib or jersey.  Your ID is not required at check-in but it may be a good idea to have it with you for emergency purposes.

Can you tell me about the Season Pass?

For 5 you become a part of an elite group of racers.  You receive unlimited registration, for one person, to any XPLORE race nationwide during the current racing season.  You will receive a special race bib that you will bring to every race.  This will be your pass into the race, although you will still need to register with a unique code so that we know you're coming (to roll out the red carpet for your arrival) and order your city-specific racing jersey for your collection.

Having a Season Pass and racing in multiple XPLORE cities will improve your chances of climbing the National Points Leaderboard, winning the massive X-PRIZE, and will give you and your team unmatched life experiences as you explore each city across the country.

*The Season Pass and Unlimited Registration begins at the time of purchase and cannot be used to get a refund for previous race payments.  The Season Pass is transferable, but each pass can only be used by one racer at a time.  The Season Pass will need to be presented at Race Day check-in and will confirm one racers registration.

I don't have a team but I want to race.  Is there anything for me?

XPLORE is open to any size team, even the solo superstars!  Especially the solo superstars!  In the registration process you have the option to register as a solo racer.  From there you will be asked if you'd like to race solo, or have us match you with other solo racers with a similarly adventurous spirit.  We will do our best to connect you with other fun individuals to kick-start the creation of an XPLORE superteam.  You will get to meet new people and maybe create a team that returns to glory for years to come.

If you register solo and then end up getting some friends to join your team before race day just log back into the Eventbrite account and change your registration details, pick a team name, and have the other members register with that same team name.

Can I volunteer at the race? Do I receive anything for helping out?

Absolutely!  Whether you're just not the racing type, you have friends or family racing and you want to be in the area, or you just would love to be a part of the XPLORE family, we have something important for you to help with!

We will need multiple volunteers in every city to help with registration, social hospitality, time keeping, results documentation, and overall management.

You will receive a custom designed racing jersey from your specific city, a custom designed decal for your dedication, plenty of water throughout the afternoon, and lots of love from the XPLORE staff.

Contact us right away at XploreUrbanRace@gmail.com to let us know you'd like to volunteer and we'll look forward to meeting you on race day!

What should I bring to the event?

Depending on the route you end up taking, a team that finishes the race will have probably covered about 5 urban miles.  You should be aware of the weather conditions and temperatures and plan accordingly with clothing, water, and any personal items you'll need for a 2-4 hour race.

Smartphones will be very beneficial and enable you to research answers along the way, but any type of camera phone or digital camera can be used in order to complete most clues. A map of the city, pen or pencil, something to take notes on, and a good understanding of the city will give your team a huge advantage.  You should probably carry your ID for emergency purposes but you will not need it to check-in as long as you properly registered.  You should also have some cash on you for any water or snacks you choose to buy along the way, or in case a clue requires your team to purchase a small item.

Wild costumes or matching team outfits are always encouraged and are guaranteed to improve team comradery! Most importantly, bring a sense of adventure, and plan to walk away with more than you came with.

What type of transportation can we use during the race?

During the race your team is only allowed to travel on your own physical ability (legs, wheelchair, stroller, etc) or on public transportation such as Buses, Subway, Tram/Trolley, etc.

You are not allowed to take private, personal, or community "shared" transportation including Taxi, Bikes, Pedicab, Horse-Drawn Carriage, Sight-Seeing Tours, Private Vehicle, Skateboards, Rollerblades, BikeShare and CarShare programs, etc.  Any use of these will most likely be documented by another team and you will be immediately disqualified from the race.

Can I change my Team Name, T-Shirt Size, Team Member's Names?

Yes, this can all be done through the Eventbrite account you created during registration.  To add team members to your team just make sure they enter your team name when they register.

We would encourage you to keep the same team name if you do multiple races to ensure we can keep track of your Leaderboard Points throughout the whole season.  If your team is already on the Leaderboard and you need to change your name please contact us via email (XploreUrbanRace@gmail.com) and we can switch it.  We will then be able to keep track of future points assigned to the new team name.

Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Yes, you should be able to update the racer details through the Eventbrite registration page by logging into your account.  If you are having trouble you can contact us at XploreUrbanRace@gmail.com and we'll help you.

What is the refund policy?

Refunds are not able to be provided.  If you have registered and are unable to attend you can transfer your ticket to another racer by changing the racer details in your Eventbrite account.  If you are unable to find someone to transfer the ticket to please contact us at XploreUrbanRace@gmail.com and we can provide you with a voucher to another XPLORE event this year, or next year's XPLORE in the same city.

Does the race get cancelled for bad weather?

No.  Urban Racers are some of the toughest people we've met and often a race that takes place in harsh conditions is much more memorable than one that takes place under ideal conditions.  Our staff are weather junkies so we have a pretty good understanding of what to expect as Race Day rolls around.  If stormy conditions are present it is the racers responsibility to seek shelter when they believe it is unsafe to be outside.  In the extremely rare case of truly hazardous conditions being predicted or present Xperience Adventures will make a decision to cancel the race and either offer a refund or provide a voucher for a rescheduled race.

How many points do I get on the National Points Leaderboard for finishing in _____ place?

The Point System is still being strategically calculated and should be released to the public by May 1st, 2013.

What is the "Domination Factor" on the National Points Leaderboard?

The Domination Factor is basically a calculation of how dominating your team is, on average, in each XPLORE race.  It is the average time (taken from any Top 25 finish) that your team was from winning the race.  The team that wins the race receives a negative time based on the difference between the first place finish and the second team.  All other Top 25 place teams receive a time based on the difference between their time and the time of the winning team.  The lower the Domination Factor the more dominant the team.  This number is used as a tie-breaker for teams on the National Points Leaderboard with an equal amount of points.

Josh Rouse

Josh Rouse
Event on 2013-06-22 20:00:00

Josh Rouse

"Songwriting for me is something I have to do to stay on the sunny side of life. It's my therapy. I pick up a guitar from time to time and it spills out. I feel lucky in that, after years of being blessed by their presence, the song spirits are still moving through me” It may have been 15+ years – from roots in rural Nebraska, through time in ‘Music City’ Nashville, TN, and to the current day relocated to a new home in cosmopolitan Spain – but it seems that the song spirits have been constant companions for Josh Rouse. And maybe no more so than on the singer-songwriter’s latest record, The Happiness Waltz, an album that marries both his past, and present – revisiting an earlier era, where his music was heavily influenced by the ‘soft rock’ of the 70’s, and combining it with lyrical tales drawn from the here and now – his modern day-to-day life, one deeply enriched by his children and family. Rouse has been lauded for his special talents – creating little slices of heaven with words and music that have captured the hearts and minds of both critics, and fans, the globe over, whether it is the talking about his “pop-folk introspection”, Filter lauding the “wide-eyed ‘thank you, ma’am’ songs that could have grated in their earnest angle if they weren’t so damn wonderfully executed” or Uncut raving about the music as “warm, molten gold, a long bath in the serenity of well-gauged bittersweet balladry” and proclaiming him “a talent to outrank Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst.” Over a storied career, from the engaging debut Dressed Like Nebraska, through his ‘golden era’ with 1972 and Nashville, and right down to the 2011 latin-bossa nova-tinged release …and the Long Vacations, Rouse has created a series of unique, and distinctive records, filled with sparkling melodies and enchanting lyrics. And there is no disputing that The Happiness Waltz again proves that he stands apart from the crowd, producing yet another set of delicate, intelligent, nuanced pop songs, all destined to become fast favorites. An album of twelve radiant new tunes, from the upbeat “This Movie’s Way Too Long” to the jangle-fest that is “Simple Pleasures”, a cohesive whole that should please fans both old and new. After a number of years influenced by his changing world – new surroundings and a myriad of fresh influences, moving to Spain and starting a family – which were wonderfully reflected in albums such as Subtitulo and El Turitsa, in 2012 Rouse has naturally gravitated to what he does best, creating old-time warm AM radio-friendly songs that will stick in your brain and not let go. Breezy, summer-y… call it what you will – it’s an elegance that has been favorably compared to the Laurel Canyon/Southern California scene of the early 1970’s. But at the same time, far from being retro, it is anchored in the most important part of the songwriter’s modern life – family. “Having children is the most meaningful and beautiful thing I've done. However, it's left almost no time for my wife and I to communicate, or do anything else for that matter. Without that time to lock myself in a room and create I can get quite melancholy. All these things put a relationship to the test but we're growing and learning everyday. I'm writing about it. Life… swinging from joy to pain, that's what this record is all about." There is no song where this is more evident than Our Love with its lyrics detailing the hum of life – getting older, “the sun hides the grey in our hair”, the minutae of daily modern living with work (“Calling on Skype while I’m out on tour”) and commitments and money and family – but all bound together by love. “It’s Good to Have You” echoes that sentiment, detailing a morning getting up & starting the day, a day which is made all the more worthwhile by having someone to share it with. And the lyrics are encased in a musical bed that enhances the feeling – a pulsing keyboard and delicate vibes adding a luminous richness to the song. On “A Lot Like Magic” Rouse sings, “I met a man and he gave me advice… he said you live each day like your very last one. So I took that down and wrote this song” – a sentiment that we should all take to heart, and one that is further realized with its upbeat horns and buoyant rhythm. “Julie (Come Out of the Rain)” is a reminder of what made Josh Rouse a pioneer of the alt-country movement with its honest and poignant lyrics, the post-Gram melodies and an atmospheric steel guitar. Meanwhile “The Ocean” takes the pedal steel work of Paul Niehaus in a whole new direction – its aching tones enhancing the themes of longing and emotion embodied in Rouse’s words. Then there is the title track, the striking “The Happiness Waltz” with its lilting piano melody and subtle harmonica – the most melancholic track on the album, and one of its most distinctive. In looking to record this new set of songs, to capture the images Rouse had in his head, there was no choice but to once again recruit Brad Jones as producer. Jones, of course, whose resume includes work with everyone from Matthew Sweet, Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw and Ron Sexsmith, to , Yo La Tengo and Chuck Prophet, helmed those two aforementioned acclaimed releases 1972 and Nashville. So in revisiting that era, there seemed no one better to help craft another album in that vein. "I thought this set of songs would turn out best if Brad was behind the board arranging, adding his touches of harmony and superb piano playing." It is a mission in which Brad Jones has been successful, superbly complementing the vivid imagery of Rouse’s lyrics with a perfect musical foundation. There are the vibes on “Start Up a Family”, delicately adding depth and meaning to the words, and horns on “The Western Isles”. Jones helps build the album into a three dimensional roadmap of Rouse’s life and loves, enhancing the moods with multiple layers of extra musical touches. Once again recorded at Rouse’s Rio Bravo studio in Valencia, Spain, uniting his cast of supporting players from ‘The Long Vacations’ – Xema Fuertes and Cayo Bellveser with a few older members like Jim Hoke on the flutes and saxes that give it that 70’s sound. And so here we are in 2013 – reflecting on a lyrical development & personal growth that has occurred over Josh Rouse’s more than ten albums so far – from his early introspective catalog through his coming out period where the world discovered his talents, and more recently on releases created since starting a new life in Europe – a creative arc that has led to The Happiness Waltz – a perfect distillation of the old and new, and maybe his most perfectly realized record yet. In an era where singer-songwriters appear to be a dime-a-dozen, he seems to be more than average, yards ahead of just a ‘run-of-the-mill guy-with-a-guitar’. When Rouse sings on “The Happiness Waltz”, “It’s good to have you in my life”, one can only think, when it comes to his music and this album, no truer words have been spoken. Yes indeed, Josh Rouse. Yes indeed. I can't wait another moment to see those eyes Lately all I care about is you and me And the future that looks so bright It feels good to have you in my life

James Blake

James Blake
Event on 2013-11-04 20:30:00

James Blake

It all started, says James Blake, with . His favorite singer and songwriter came to see him at the Troubadour in Los Angeles two years ago and hung around afterwards to talk. "She's an oracle," smiles James. "I learned a lot just from meeting her." What they talked about most was the idea of permanence—how to survive and thrive as an artist. On the flight back to London James wrote "Overgrown", the gently immense song which lends its name to his highly anticipated second album. It's about the things that last encapsulated in the lyric, "I don't want to be a star but a stone on the shore, a lone doorframe in a war." "I think it's the best thing I've ever written, and it's the strongest message on the album," says James. "Joni embodies the things I'm talking about. She was the spark that led to that song." Musically broad and emotionally deep, Overgrown as big as an advance on James's eponymous 2011 debut. The growth is similar to the evolution that album evinced from the mercurial dubstep of his early EPs. It also reflects how much the 24-year-old Londoner's life has changed in the past two years. His debut sold over 400,000 copies — quite a feat for a record so uncompromisingly introspective and experimental. It also picked up Mercury, BRIT and Ivor Novello nominations, sent him around the world on tour, and brought him into contact with a wide array of fans and collaborators that includes not only Mitchell but Jay-Z, , , Björk, Drake, , and The RZA. Most importantly, touring the debut led him to meet his girlfriend, whose presence (and sometimes absence: she lives in Los Angeles) gives Overgrown its considerable emotional weight. "This past year has been intense," says James. "In a time where otherwise you could feel the ground was moving too fast to remain normal or happy, she's been there" Their transatlantic relationship informs songs, such as the extraordinary electronic soul of the single "Retrograde", which evoke both intimacy and distance. "The album is filled with the feeling of being in love for the first time and working out what that actually means," he says. "All these things become part of your music." Early on in the process, his father, the musician James Litherland, told him he needed to concentrate on his songwriting because his two best-known songs were other people's, notably Feist's "Limit to Your Love" and Litherland's own "Where to Turn", rewritten as The Wilhelm Scream. "He said songs are what people remember and you need to write some," James adds. "I really worked at it." The songwriting was also shaped by playing dozens of shows with his childhood friends, guitarist Rob McAndrews and percussionist Ben Assister. He realized that some of the avant-garde tracks that made perfect sense in his bedroom didn't always translate to audiences. "Instinctively, I've gravitated towards wanting to make music that people will really remember and love," he says. "It's an emotional impact I'm looking for." His singing, heavily treated on his earlier work, also privileges clarity and immediacy like never before. Many of the songs came to life in airplanes or in hotel rooms before being completed at his home in North London. It was on tour that he befriended Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, with whom he later collaborated on the cryptic Auto-Tuned spiritual of Fall Creek Boys Choir. It appeared on 2011's transitional Enough Thunder EP, which also included his beautiful rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You." For most of Overgrown, James is still a one-man show, but he opened up to other people, including Brian Eno on the percussive soul mantra "Digital Lion". When James and Rob arrived at Eno's house, the veteran artist and producer played them his favourite gospel record, Peace Be Still by Reverend James Cleveland and the Angelic Choir. "It just happened to be my favorite song too. We obviously had something in common." James was immersed in the first Wu-Tang Clan album when he wrote "Take a Fall For Me" in New York, so he asked the RZA to appear on it and the legendary MC/producer responded with a playfully anglophilic verse which makes reference to "fish and chips with vinegar, with a cold glass of stout". Another encounter with hip-hop royalty was entirely unplanned. While visiting his girlfriend in LA, James was invited to Kanye West's studio. "He summons you like some sort of emperor," he laughs. He found himself playing tracks from his 2011 EP "Love What Happened Here" to a crack team of hip hop producers and meeting Jay-Z, who approvingly told him, "You're a baaad man." "Just to know that Kanye had played a tune off a Hessle EP to Jay-Z and puts things in perspective," says James. "It's freed me in some ways because I'm not compartmentalizing my music anymore. I could put out a track on [electronica label] Hessle Audio or I could send it to an MC. All the boundaries have gone." The walls have certainly come down on Overgrown. From the jetlagged hip hop of "Take a Fall For Me" to hall-of-mirrors take on a late 90s R&B jam in "Life Round Here", James never has the same idea twice. He affirms, "I probably won't use a sound if it reminds me of another song and another time. That's gone. It's done now. Things should always progress." This relentlessly forward-thinking approach is reflected in James's enduring love of dance music. He evem currently runs a club night at London's Plastic People called "1-800-Dinosaur". "I feel at home in clubs," admits James. "Dance music constantly mutates and evolves and never stays still." James's newfound confidence and thirst for change has produced a second album that takes him to a new level of craft and feeling that his previous work only hinted at. "These last two years have really formed me," he concludes. "I have huge ambitions." It all comes back to that conversation about permanence at the Troubadour. The message of Overgrown is clear. James Blake is here to stay.

Joan Baez is a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable – marching on the front line of the with , inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a , singing on the first tour and more recently, standing alongside when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park.

Decades into their career, the Indigo Girls still amaze conventional pundits with their ability to grow and thrive no matter what the state of the music industry, at any given point. Saliers and Ray began performing together in high school, transferred their honest, urgent performing style onto the stages of countless small clubs, then saw their public profile take off with the 1989 release of their self-titled breakthrough (an album that included the first hit, Closer To Fine, and went on to win Best Contemporary Folk Recording at the 1990 Grammy's).
