Question by Mark J: How do gay pride parades affect your impression of homosexuals?
Overall, do gay pride parades give you a positive impression of homosexuals, a negative impression, or do they have little or no effect at all?
When you respond, please say if you are gay, straight, or bisexual. Thanks.

They kill about half of the hope that I have with giving them rights.
I am all for giving them marriage rights, but I don’t want to see it.

straight as a line
i understand why they do it…they are like a race of people, and them not being able to have their rights irritates them too. this doesn’t change when they have parades.
I saw a Gay Pride parade in San Francisco a few years ago. I left with the impression that gays are bigger freaks than I had originally thought.
Im straight, And I think gay pride parades help other people come out of the closet and show that there is nothing wrong with being gay, Wich there isn’t :]
Idk, its weird. we dont have heterosexual parades!!
bisexual and it doesnt really it just gives them a little freedom to be themselfs without judgment for a few days
Negative impression. Last time I looked at pictures of the Mardi Gras in Australia I saw a gay person with a cross dressed like Jesus with a ‘crown of thorns’. The cross had $ 100 notes stuck to it, every where. It was not pleasant. Disrespectful. The gay person was mocking Him by pretending to suffer from pain holding the cross!
Jesus suffered so much for them. And that’s what they give Him!
I dont really like gay people that much i dont put that out in the open all that much but the parades really do annoy me. It ruins my opinion of them more and more
It gives me the impression that there are (thankfully) people out there that are unafraid to be out, proud, and have fun. Prides are events to celebrate the fact that we’re different and still okay, to show the haters that we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not disappearing any time soon, to raise awareness and support for our rights, and for having a blast and wearing rainbows and dancing.
I’m a lesbian and I love Pride!
I Dont care at all.Im not a gay hater.I just tell em whats right then thats it.I dont argue either.
I’m straight.
The Gay Pride things are an abomination. Not because there are homosexuals there holding hands, talking about marriage, wearing stretchy shiny pants – nah, I’m on board with that. I support gay rights.
It’s the music that I’m offended by. Deeply offended. God killed Cindi Laupers career in the eighties for a reason! Now they’ve mutated it, it’s not just eighties pop any more it’s vile remixed with techno to be a four hour long dance song. That’s not right, it’s just not right.
im gay.
they should be prideful of who they are and want to show the world who they are. i dont know how it affects people’s views. i mean, some people may be drawn in and given a boost to start supporting, and others may be turned completely away from it because of it.
in my opinion, i think it is great that they are prideful, but we dont need to be going around acting all silly-nilly and make ourselves look like complete idiots. but ive never been to a parade yet so i wouldnt know if that happens or not.
Hey I’m straight and I’m friends with a bunch of gay people, but gay pride parades are a negative for me. It’s not that i have a problem with the parades but often times the negative stereo types of gays are often shown at these. A more calm peaceful well dressed parade would be better, b/c then it wouldn’t make people who are uncomfortable with the idea more uncomfortable rather they would see that these are just normal people just with a different set of values.
I think of BRUNO from what I’ve seen of “gay pride”
I think it kind of makes us look like freaks, to be honest. I’m not really big on it. I am all for sticking together, but I don’t think we need to make a spectacle of ourselves.
I’m Bi…I have no use for people who either shout “I’m Gay” or ‘I’m straight” from the rooftops…personally I would just as soon you did your job, and kept your personal stuff to yourself….
i am straight but as with each & every person who has ever thought about sex i have thought of being gay or bi.. i just decided that wasn’t my path.. anyone who denies this is lying as it is factually impossible to NOt think of it at some point else you cannot make a choice either way..
with that said, the parades give me negative impression of gay society as they are often filled with freaks who are not freaks in my opinion because of sexuality but because of actions & manner of dress… i generally feel many of the freaks in these parades are what hurt gay rights and promote peoples feeling of it being unholy lifestyle or unatural lifestyle… i know this cannot be truth since homosexual behavior happens throughout nature as any farmer can tell you and catholic priests seem to have proven by constant and thurough action that it must not be unholy either…
still the parades are not a good thing in my opinion, but only because of the way they are done.. make it more like a labor day parade instead of a mardi gras parade..
I think they make us look like freaks.
Since I said “us” it is safe to assume I am gay.
straight…..as a circle
and i totally agree with Daniel
I’m gay and I have no interest in gay parades. They make us look silly and over the top on purpose because they take advantage of the fact that they’re gay, when in all reality they are no different than anyone else. I’m all for a more humble, open minded, fun get together. It seems the only thing productive that comes out of it is further perpetuating gay stereotypes.
Modern man has had many years to learn tolerance of alternative lifestyles. Yet its only the last 30 or so years that anything has changed.
Its interesting to observe that as things like Gay Pride Parades have become the norm in various communities, peoples understanding of others has also changed for the better, in those communities.
I guess its because of the education values in public parades that they are used for many things, not just gay issues.
I think that the much higher number of people today who demonstrate tolerance and understanding this proves that the current efforts do help to educate people.

Its OK for you to sit there passing judgement on others, You go walk a mile in the shoes of these people and then tell me your religion has shown them any compassion. Remember its your religion that condemn them to go to hell etc etc.
Gay here. I haven’t attended a gay pride parade for over 10 years. I think they’re silly and do more harm than good in terms of public image. At a time when gays are trying to be seen as normal, the parades do us a terrible disservice.
I’m all in favor of the festivals that take place following the parades in most cities, but the parades themselves? I think they should be canceled. A lot of people hear the word “gay” and they think “freaks”. The parades mostly reinforce that negative image.
“Jesus suffered so much for them. And that’s what they give Him!”
- Yeah, because apparently all of us walk around carrying across on our shoulders to mock Jesus.Good job noticing that. Seriously, what an ignorant thing to say. That would be like me saying all Christians Pickett funerals with Shirley Phelps holding signs that say ‘thank god for IED’s.’ You really shouldn’t say such broad statements, especially being a ‘christian’.
I think the whole idea of straight pride day is excellent. Why? Because all the aforementioned reasons in the opening of your piece notwithstanding, sometimes the whole gay, get used to it, get a little old. How about, gay, and I care.”Most of the time, unless a hate mongerer, you care what people do in their bedroom. Therefore, I think unnecessary and sometimes attention seeking to constantly let being gay define who you are which a lot of gay people do. I once asked my friend who was gay, “Why do you off so many sentences with a gay man, or my Perhaps straight people just wanna join in the fun. Oh and just because a person received discrimination for being a homosexual, mean they been discriminated against for something. Prime example; White women were trying to gain suffrage at the same time black were trying to gain their freedom. Did the white women who had seemingly perfect lives not deserve to have parades for their cause? If gay pride parades which are nothing more parades to celebrate a sexual preference are accepted as a norm, then why not straight pride parades?
- I can’t wait until the world looks back at gay marriage rights (or lack thereof) the way it now looks back at racial s …
