Johnny Weissmuller in Tarzan’s New York Adventure (1942)

Richard Thorpe Directs Tarzan’s Adventure

Myles Connolly, William R. Lipman and Gordon Kahn wrote the screenplay based on characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). Richard Thorpe (Tarzan Escapes, Tarzan’s Secret Treasure) directed and David Snell rendered the original music score.

Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan), Maureen O’Sullivan (Jane Parker) and Johnny Sheffield (Boy) head the cast. Other players include Virginia Grey (Connie Beach), Charles Bickford (Buck Rand), Paul Kelly (Jimmy Shields), Chill Wills (Manchester Montford), Cy Kendall (Col. Ralph Sargent), Russell Hicks (Judge Abbotson), Howard Hickman (Blake Norton), Charles Lane (Gould Beaton), Miles Mander (Portmaster) and Hobart Cavanaugh (Hotel Desk Clerk).

Tarzan’s New York Adventure Filmed in Florida and California

Budgeted at a healthy 0,000, Tarzan’s New York Adventure began filming on December 17, 1941, a mere 10 days after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. By early February 1942, the picture was completed.

Wakulla Springs, Florida, subbed as the movie’s Dark Africa setting, with some exterior scenes minus the cast being shot in . The entire Hagenback-Wallace Circus was rented by producers and housed on MGM’s back lot in Hollywood.

The movie’s big scene – Tarzan’s dive from the Brooklyn Bridge – was filmed on lot 3 at MGM Studios. Cameraman Jack Smith positioned himself high atop MGM’s tower, aiming straight down as a dummy dropped into a tank of water.

Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O’Sullivan in Final Tarzan Movie Pairing

Tarzan’s New York Adventure marks the final pairing of Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan as Africa’s hottest couple. Their first movie together had come ten years earlier in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932). It’s a fitting swan song for the enchanting O’Sullivan, who’s afforded the opportunity to shed her skimpy jungle attire for something a little more 5th Avenue fashionable.

Tarzan’s New York Adventure provides a rousing farewell to the Weissmuller/O’Sullivan team. When circus owner/big game hunter Buck Rand flies out of Africa with Boy on board, Tarzan and Jane follow. Arriving in the Big Apple, the two try to reclaim their son in a court battle with the rich and powerful Rand.

Tarzan fans will revel in Tarzan’s New York Adventure. The jungle scenes are exciting, but the real action – and laughs – come in Gotham, where Africa’s favorite son, along with chimpanzee Cheetah, learn the strange ways of civilization. “Woman sick! Scream for witch doctor!” Tarzan proclaims after hearing an opera singer on the radio. His assessment of the smoke-filled Club Moonbeam isn’t much better, as he queries of Jane: “Smell like a Swahili swamp. Why people stay?”

Like Jane, Tarzan sheds his usual jungle outfit and goes “native” – donning a dapper double-breasted suit. But the vaunted “King of the Jungle” doesn’t remain part of the fashion crowd for long as he later “swings” through the canyons of Manhattan, on his merry way to a spectacular 250-foot plunge from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Look for an uncredited Elmo Lincoln in the role of a circus roustabout. Lincoln was the first movie Tarzan, starring in Tarzan of the Apes (1918).

Tarzan’s New York Adventure Release, Reviews, DVD

Tarzan’s New York Adventure was first screened – free of charge – for American servicemen stationed in Iceland on May 10, 1942.
“With an African yodel and a tailor-made suit, our jungle friend is back in Tarzan’s New York Adventure, currently chilling the veins of reviewers and twelve-year-olds at the Capitol,” reported Theodore Strauss of The New York Times (8/7/42).

101 Dalmatians has charmed audiences for generations with its irresistible tail-wagging stars, memorable music, and a wonderful blend of fantasy, humor, and adventure. Now, with spectacular new bonus features and brilliantly restored, Walt Disney s beloved animated classic shines like never before in an all-new 2-disc Platinum Edition.
Cruella De Vil, Disney s most outrageous villain, sets the fur-raising adventure in motion when she dognaps all of Pongo and Perdita s puppies. Through the power of the Twilight Bark, Pongo leads a heroic cast of animal characters on a quest across London to rescue them.
Bring home the exciting 2-disc Platinum Edition with something for everyone, including the all-new virtual Dalmatians game, over 101 pop-up trivia facts, an all-new music video and much more!Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney; she's flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it's the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs' point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake. --Bill Desowitz

On the DVD
This two-disc platinum edition features great sound and incredibly bright, intense colors thanks to the restoration process, but its most impressive selling point is the huge assortment of bonus features designed to delight children, families, and the most serious Disney fans. Kids will have fun caring for their very own puppy in the virtual Dalmatian game for television or on DVD ROM and can find out just what kind of puppy they're most like and which human Disney character they're most compatible with in the puppy profiler game. The fun with language game is geared toward the very young preschooler and teaches numbers and the names of common household items. A modern Selena Gomez music video of "Cruella DeVil" will appeal to tweens and teens. The whole family will enjoy the "101 Pop Up Facts For Families" option which prints various movie facts like the name and author of the original book and how specific scenes differ between the book and the movie right on the screen during the movie and Disney fans will love the similar "101 Pop Up Facts For Fans" feature which supplies a wide variety of film trivia about featured voice talents, famous Disney animators that worked on the film, technical devices employed like multi-pane shots and the Xerox process, and which artists directed specific scenes in the movie. Eleven separate Backstage Disney featurettes interview a host of animators, writers, historians, producers, and story men regarding the film's contemporary feel and the groundbreaking technical processes like the then-new Xerox process utilized in making 101 Dalmatians. Also highlighted is Bill Pete's amazing storytelling contribution to the film, the technical and mechanical innovations of Ub Iwerks, the songwriting process, and the animation prowess of famous Disney animators like Woolie Reitherman, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Marc Davis, Ken Anderson, and Walt Peregoy. The 12-minute dramatization of the longstanding correspondence between author Dodie Smith and Walt Disney is intriguing and the trailers and radio and television spots provide fun historical reference for the film and its various releases. Finally, the "Music and More" feature presents a variety of deleted and abandoned songs as well as many alternate versions and takes of songs used in the final film. --Tami Horiuchi

Hercules (Gold Collection) Reviews

Hercules (Gold Collection)

  • An outrageous odyssey of fun, fantasy and adventure unfolds in the hilarious hit film, Hercules - Disney's 35th animated triumph "brimming with comic surprise!" (Entertainment Weekly) Taken from the gods as a newborn, adopted on Earth, Hercules becomes an awkward, teenage pillar of strength. Trying to fit in, he discovers his dad is Zeus and home is Mount Olympus - if he can move from "zero
British artist/political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe was brought in to assist with character design, and he remained involved as an ongoing artistic advisor to the animators. Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

Pocahontas (10th Anniversary Edition) Reviews

Pocahontas (Two-Disc 10th Anniversary Edition)

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • AC-3; Animated; Closed-captioned; Color; Dolby; Dubbed; DVD; Original recording remastered; Restored
All the music, adventure, and colorful fun of Disney's POCAHONTAS come to life like never before in the 10th Anniversary Edition 2-Disc Set. Bursting with all the "Colors Of The Wind," POCAHONTAS tells the story of a free-spirited girl who wonders what adventures await "Just Around The Riverbend." Pocahontas -- along with her playful pals Meeko and Flit -- relies on the guidance of her loving and wise Grandmother Willow when English settlers arrive on the shores of their village. Her chance meeting with the courageous Captain John Smith leads to a beautiful friendship that bridges the gap between two cultures, and changes history. Now fully restored, POCAHONTAS includes the song "If I Never Knew You," and never-before-seen animation seamlessly integrated into the original film. This 2-Disc 10th Anniversary Edition is loaded with spectacular bonus features, all-new games, and soaring Academy Award(R)-winning music (1995 Best Original Musical Score, Best Original Song, "Colors Of The Wind"). Disney's POCAHONTAS is a fun-filled adventure your whole family will enjoy.Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual.
