The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives Reviews

The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives

What was the tipping point for Malcolm Gladwell? What unscripted event made Meryl Streep who she is? How did Mario Batali cook up his recipe for success? In this inspiration-packed book, Katie Couric reports from the front lines of the worlds of politics, entertainment, sports, philanthropy, the arts, and business—distilling the ingenious, hard-won insights of leaders and visionaries, who tell us all how to take chances, follow our passions, cope with criticism, and, perhaps most important, commit to something greater than ourselves.

Among the many voices to be heard here are financial guru Suze Orman on the benefits of doing what’s right, not what’s easy; director Steven Spielberg on listening rather than being listened to; quarterback Drew Brees on how his (literal) big break changed his life; and novelist Curtis Sittenfeld on the secrets of a great long-term relationship (she suggests marrying someone less neurotic than you); not to mention:

• Michael Bloomberg: “Eighty percent of success is showing up . . . early.”
• Eric Stonestreet: “Remember that the old lady who’s taking forever in line is someone’s grandma.”
• Joyce Carol Oates: “Read widely—what you want to read, and not what someone suggests that you should read.”
• Jimmy Kimmel: “When in doubt, order the hamburger.’”
• Apolo Ohno: “It’s not about the forty seconds; it’s about the four years, the time it took to get there.”
• Madeleine K. Albright: “Never play hide-and-seek with the truth.”

Along the way, Couric reflects on the good advice—and the missteps—that have guided her from her early days as a desk assistant at ABC to her groundbreaking role as the first female anchor of the CBS Evening News. She reveals how the words of Thomas Jefferson helped her deal with her husband’s tragic death from cancer, and what encouraged her to leave the security of NBC’s Today show for a new adventure at CBS.

Delightful, empowering, and moving, The Best Advice I Ever Got is the perfect book for anyone who is thinking about the future, contemplating taking a risk, or daring to make a leap into the great unknown. This book is for all of us, young or old, who want to see how today’s best and brightest got it right, got it wrong, and came out on top.

One of his major coups was to get a verbal commitment from Noah Spence, a Pennsylvania native who Rivals ranks as the top defensive end in the class of 2012. Florida, LSU and Penn State were all receiving heavy consideration from Spence until Meyer began recruiting him. Spence’s commitment shows that Florida’s coaches will not only have to contend with Meyer on their turf, but for the top national recruits. Halfway through the season, believing that anyone other than Aaron Rodgers would win the MVP stretched the limits of credibility. threw ten of his 14 interceptions in the first half of the season, and through eight weeks, were only a 5-3 team. He wasn’t really a factor. Then Brees went bananas, throwing for 27 TDs and four interceptions over his last eight games, and throwing for more than 300 yards in each of his last seven. Green Bay’s 560 points were second to the 589 New England scored in 2007, its undefeated regular season. New Orleans had 547 points, fourth all-time. Brees and the Saints led a slew of NFL record setters this season. Brees shattered ‘s 27-year-old mark of 5,084 yards passing by throwing for 5,476. He had 468 completions this season, breaking Peyton Manning’s 2010 mark of 450. He finished the season completing 71.6 percent of his passes, breaking his own 2009 NFL record of a 70.6 completion percentage. Brees also surpassed 300 yards passing for the seventh straight game and 13th time this season, both beating NFL records he already held. The Saints set several single-season records, including offensive yards with 7,474, team yards passing with 5,347 — sacks yardage reduces the total — and first downs with 416. Darren Sproles had an NFL-record 2,696 combined yards, easily breaking the previous mark of 2,690 set by Derrick Mason with Tennessee in 2000. New England’s Brady finished the regular season with the second-most yards passing ever, 5,235. Brady’s teammate, Rob Gronkowski, set the single-season record for tight ends with 1,327 yards receiving after gaining 108 on eight catches in a 49-21 win over Buffalo. That broke the mark of 1,310 set earlier Sunday by Jimmy Graham of the Saints. The previous mark of 1,290 was set in 1980 by Kellen Winslow of the . The previous mark of 1,290 was set in 1980 by Kellen Winslow of the San Diego Chargers. Patriots coach Bill Belichick became the only coach in NFL history with at least 13 regular-season wins in five seasons. Rob Bironas made a 43-yard field goal for the Titans, extending his own NFL record by kicking a field goal of 40 yards or longer for the 10th consecutive game. The Raiders set records for penalties and yards penalized by committing eight for 64 yards Sunday in a 38-26 loss to San Diego that kept them out of the playoffs. That gave them 163 penalties for 1,358 yards, surpassing the totals of 158 for 1,304 set by the 1998 Chiefs. San Francisco finished with 10 total turnovers, which equaled the 2010 Patriots for fewest in NFL history.

Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity Reviews

Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity

When a potentially career-ending shoulder injury left quarterback Drew Brees without a team—and facing the daunting task of having to learn to throw a football all over again—coaches around the NFL wondered, Will he ever come back? After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, leaving more than 80 percent of the city underwater, many wondered, Will the city ever come back? And with their stadium transformed into a makeshift refugee camp, forcing the Saints to play their entire 2005 season on the road, people questioned, Will the Saints ever come back? It takes a special person to turn adversity into success and despair into hope—yet that is exactly what Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees has done—and with the weight of an entire city on his shoulders. Coming Back Stronger is the ultimate comeback story, not only of one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, but also of a city and a team that many had all but given up on. Brees’s inspiring message of hope and encouragement proves that with enough faith, determination, and heart, you can overcome any obstacle life throws your way and not only come back, but come back stronger.
