LIFE Dick Clark and the History of Rock ‘n’ Roll Reviews

LIFE Dick Clark and the History of Rock 'n' Roll

  • Traces his 60-year path along the American music scene.
  • Rarely-seen photos and archival interviews.
  • LIFE Magazine chronicles his history.
  • Hardcover; 80 pages.
Dick Clark, known widely as "America's oldest teenager," single-handedly formed the culture of the day on American Bandstand, and helped give rise to rock 'n' roll. He was a man of many roles: an entrepreneur, producer, game-show host and much more. It didn't feel like New Year's Eve in America if you weren't watching Dick Clark count down the minutes. The statistics are staggering; Bandstand brought in 40 million viewers a day when the country's population wasn't even 200 million and when many people were at work-one might size that up to airing a Super Bowl every day! However, Dick Clark's influence transcended the music. Against dissent, he integrated the dance floor and gave Baby Boomer America a daily vision of what a non-segregated society could be; early guests on his show included Chuck Berry and James Brown, as well as Jerry Lee Lewis and the Everly Brothers. Clark even made television an interactive pastime by reaching out to his viewers and getting them to call in and say what they thought about the couple of the day, or the song. This made Bandstand the progenitor of much of today's TV culture-shows like American Idol, The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Dick Clark was also a friend of LIFE's; in this book, we bring back an earlier LIFE piece in which he reminiscences about the exciting early days of rock 'n' roll. He was a legend who introduced us to other legends, and for that, he will always be remembered.

"Going to a SUPER bob show is like getting on a f'ing roller coaster, they rock your ass off and you can't wait to get back on." -Whitney (On Air personality) DC 101

SUPER bob is a four-piece high energy based in the area. Childhood friends Adam Smith (guitar) and Matt Santoro (vocals) formed the band, under the name "bob" in ‘05 with the vision of bringing something fresh to a rock scene that seemed to have forgotten what was really about. Soon after, they added Drew Recny (bass) and Chris Faircloth (drums). This band breathes rebellious authenticity back into music and reminds you that is supposed to make you get up and not give a damn about being you.

When you see SUPER bob live your senses will be overwhelmed by a borderline excess of stage presence and heart pounding sound. P.R.S sponsored guitarist Adam Smith brings a package of uniqueness, flare, and pure adrenaline that is rarely found in any one musician, while classically trained Drew Recny packs a clean, punchy bass style that is loaded with obvious talent and a technique that only comes with full dedication and commitment to his craft. Christopher Faircloth, a Spaun Drum Company sponsored drummer, brings an almost indescribable style to the table, one with high flying stick tricks, and hard pounding, ear deafening, strong beats. The proverbial icing on the SUPER bob cake is provided by Matt Santoro's vocals which can only be described as unabashedly his own. Full of ear catching melodies, unapologetic and blatantly honest lyrics, and a flow that is uncommon yet undeniably at home in rock, Santoro's songwriting couples with an unrivaled stage presence that caps off one of the best live bands you will ever get the chance to experience.

SUPER bob's buzz was established with their eye catching live shows, non-stop hustle, and no excuses work ethic. Tattoos, colored hair, dread locks, and plenty of good old fashioned rock n roll grit distinguishes them from the undedicated and identifies them as the real deal in an industry riddled with fakers. After three years of hard work at gaining recognition, winning the loyalty of fans in their local scene, and growing a fan-base across the Mid-Atlantic, SUPER bob hooked up with Grammy nominated producer Garth "GGGarth" Richardson. They went to Vancouver BC to record their first record entitled "bbbob" and then hit the road for the next three years playing an average of 130 shows annually over a span of 19 states.

Having just released their second full length record (Rock N Roll) in the spring of 2010, SUPER bob stands prepared to release a third full length in the summer of 2011. Produced by Matt LaPlant at the Bieler Brothers studios in Pompano Beach FL, the new SUPER bob album promises to blow minds and take the rock game to whole new dimensions. This band grows in exponential steps and has a collection of recorded songs that they can proudly boast is only surpassed by the full-effect of attending a live show. Keep your eyes and ears open for this uniquely amazing band. You won't be sorry.

"I have seen over 7,500 bands in the last fifteen years, and SUPER bob is one of the best. Never have I seen a band gain fans so quick and rock it on stage with such energy. They will woo grandmas to teenies" -Mick Minchow Owner/ Booking Agent/ Promoter – Ground Zero-Spartanburg SC

The Jerry Lee Lewis Story

The Lewis Story
Event on 2012-02-17 20:00:00

Jerry Lee Lewis first hit international recognition in 1957 and quickly developed a reputation as the first wild man of rock and without doubt ’s most exciting performer, his nickname of ‘Killer’ accurately reflecting the dynamism of his stage show. It was not unusual for him to destroy pianos on stage and was even known to set them alight!

This brand new, exhilarating show tells the story of Jerry Lee from his meteoric rise to fame through hits such as ‘’, ‘Breathless’, ‘High School Confidential’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ to his equally as fast fall from grace when he married his 13 year old cousin Myra, back to his reinstatement as one of music’s biggest names with his triumphal return to the top in the mid 1960s when he performed at The Star Club in Hamburg.

See performance here…

Featuring more than 20 of his hits and performed with energy that the Killer himself would have been proud of this is a show that will appeal to both those who were brought up with rock n roll or who are discovering it for the first time.

I've seen Jerry Lee live twice – the last time at the October before last at the Forum, Camden Town, and I've been a fan all my adult life. I must tell you that I thought your interpretation was absolutely stunning. You are clearly a brilliant musician, and have got The Killer off to a tee! P. M. Fakenham Norfolk.

Just to say you were absolutely FANTASTIC in 'Killer' at the Medina Theatre on the 11th October. Hope you appear over here again Peter. Thank you very much for a most enjoyable evening. R. A. Isle of Wight

I went to Crosby Civic Hall last night and saw Peter Gill in the above show. Having travelled up from Chesterfield I was hoping it would be a good show – it wasn’t – it was brilliant! P.S. Chesterfield

The War on Drugs+ Purling Hiss+ Carter Tanton

The War on Drugs+ Purling Hiss+ Carter Tanton
Event on 2011-10-28 20:00:00
The deeper we dig into modern music, the less our tastes make any real sense. For years, we found it curious, this equal devotion to and Spacemen 3, artists who made some of their most pivotal records at nearly the same time but with polar approaches. Or how about our mirrored admiration of Neu! '75 and Blood on the Tracks, two very different albums from two different continents that happen to share a release year and a major place in our hearts? Flying Saucer Attack and Springsteen? New Order and No Wave? The Byrds and Bread and Burt Bacharach? How is a music fan supposed to reconcile all of this? Fall in love with Philadelphia's The War on Drugs. The vehicle of Adam Granduciel — frontman, rambler, shaman, pied piper guitarist and apparent arranger-extraordinaire — The War on Drugs seemed similarly obsessed with disparate ideas, with building uncompromised rock monuments from pieces that might have seemed odd pairs. On their debut, the life-affirming Wagonwheel Blues, folk-rock marathons come damaged by drum machines. Electronic and instrumental reprises precede songs they've yet to play, and becomes lyrical motivation for bold futuristic visions. Now, Granduciel has done it again, better than before: Slave Ambient, their proper second album, is a brilliant 47-minute sprawl of rock 'n' roll, conceptualized with a sense of adventure and captured with seasons of bravado. Slave Ambient features a team of Philadelphia's finest musicians, including multi-instrumentalists Dave Hartley and Robbie Bennett, and drummer Mike Zanghi. Recorded throughout the last four years at Granduciel's home studio in Philly, Jeff Ziegler's Uniform Recording and Echo Mountain in Asheville, NC, the album puts the weirdest influences in just the right places. Synthesizers fall where you might expect more electric guitars (and vice versa); country-rock sidles up to the warped extravagance of '80s pop. Instant classic "Baby Missiles" is part Springsteen fever dream, part motorik anthem. "Original Slave" might sound like a hillbilly power drone, but "City Reprise #12" suggests Phil Collins un-retiring to back Harmonia. "I Was There" is Harvest rebuilt by some selection of psychedelic all-stars, while the shuffling, sleepy opener "Best Night" offers a band with too many ideas to be in a hurry. During the mid-album centerpiece "Come to the City," Granduciel howls and moans, "All roads lead to me/ I've been moving/ I've been drifting." Indeed, however unlikely that might seem, all these sounds arrive cohesively in one unmistakable place. The War on Drugs are one of the most exciting young rock 'n' roll bands in the world. People question that conviction, unconvinced that an act so new or with such clear historical forebears could absolutely be called a favorite. Sure, The War on Drugs' music overflows with echoes and strains of the songs and sounds we've all loved, yet it always feels singular and seamless, a perfect and pure distillation of influences into something that sounds like nothing else. Every song on Slave Ambient is instantly identifiable and infinitely intricate, a latticework of ideas and energies building into mile-high rock anthems. They are songs for future converts, welcome signs for folks who should, soon enough, also call The War on Drugs their favorite young rock 'n' roll band on the planet. — GRAYSON CURRIN Purling Hiss- http://audiomilk.com/daily-servings/purling-hiss-dont-even-try-it-woodsist http://alteredzones.com/posts/1546/purling-hiss-hoodoo/ Carter Tanton- Carter Tanton New record in October on Western Vinyl (Here We Go Magic, Callers, Dirty Projectors, etc.) PR via Brooke Black at Big Hassle (Edward Sharpe, Gillian Welch, Silver Sun Pickups, Dr. Dog, Dawes, etc.) http://pitchfork.com/forkcast/16056-murderous-joy/ Previously toured and released record under the name Tulsa (vitals below) – he has been touring and recording with Marissa Nadler and Lower Dens in between his own releases. adv/ at the door ALL AGES
