Red Dawn (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Reviews

Red Dawn (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), and Isabel Lucas (Immortals) deliver a full arsenal of pulse-pounding excitement in this explosive action-adventure! The unsuspecting citizens of Spokane, Washington, wake up one morning to the shocking sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky in a surprise attack on the United States. Soon the entire city is under enemy control, but a group of courageous teenagers has decided to fight back, by waging an all-out war against the invaders, to take back their town - and their freedom! Those parachutes floating quietly down over the skies of Spokane are disconcerting, to say the least. For good reason: that's the advance force of the invading North Korean military, who have nothing less than the occupation of the U.S. of A. in mind. That's right, the North Koreans; because the Soviet fighters of the 1984 version of Red Dawn have gone the way of the Cold War, this 2012 remake looks to Kim Jong-un's isolated regime as the 21st-century Commie menace. As before, it's up to a group of local teens--you know, the Wolverines--to lead the resistance; Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck step into the roles played by Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell in the original. All of which could still have some jingoistic survivalist appeal, if only the remake weren't executed so ham-handedly. The action might be lively, but the dialogue scenes are staged as though nobody in the movie had ever spoken before. Each character has a single note, and the actors--including Adrianne Palicki, Josh Hutcherson, and Tom and Nicole's kid Connor Cruise--tend to play the intensity card. If the David vs. Goliath fantasy still works, great; otherwise, stick with the '84 version, which at least had director John Milius's craftsmanship on display, however absurd the story might have been. (Footnote to film history: this version of Red Dawn was shot with the Chinese identified as the invaders, then altered in postproduction to shift to North Koreans. Fear of losing the Chinese market proved a greater argument than plausibility, if plausibility comes into play in these circumstances.) --Robert Horton

The Hunger Games [2-Disc Blu-ray + Ultra-Violet Digital Copy] Reviews

The Hunger Games [2-Disc Blu-ray + Ultra-Violet Digital Copy]

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister's place and must rely upon her sharp instincts when she's pitted against highly trained Tributes who have prepared their entire lives. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.Building on her performance as a take-no-prisoners teenager in Winter's Bone, Jennifer Lawrence portrays heroine Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross's action-oriented adaptation of author-screenwriter Suzanne Collins's young adult bestseller. Set in a dystopian future in which the income gap is greater than ever, 24 underprivileged youth fight to the death every year in a televised spectacle designed to entertain the rich and give the poor enough hope to quell any further unrest--but not too much, warns Panem president Snow (Donald Sutherland), because that would be "dangerous." Hailing from the same mining town, 16-year-olds Katniss and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson, The Kids Are All Right) represent District 12 with the help of escort Effie (an unrecognizable Elizabeth Banks) and mentor Haymitch (a scene-stealing Woody Harrelson). At first they're adversaries, but a wary partnership eventually develops, though the rules stipulate that only one contestant can win. For those who haven't read the book, the conclusion is likely to come as a surprise. Before it arrives, Ross (Pleasantville) depicts a society in which the Haves appear to have stepped out of a Dr. Seuss book and the Have-Nots look like refugees from the WPA photographs of Walker Evans. It's an odd mix, made odder still by frenetic fight scenes where it's hard to tell who's doing what to whom. Fortunately, Lawrence and Hutcherson prove a sympathetic match in this crazy, mixed-up combination of Survivor, Lost, and the collected works of George Orwell. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Whereas Katniss kills with finesse, Collins writes with raw power. . .The and Catching Fire Expose Children to Exactly the kind of violence we usually shield them from. But that just goes to show how much adults forget about what it’s like to be a child. Kids are physical creatures. And they’re not stupid. They know all about violence and power and raw emotions. What’s really scary is when adults pretend that such things don’t exist.

I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn’t have to stop reading. The story kept me up for several nights in a row, because even after I was finished.

I just lay in bed wide awake thinking about it. . . is amazing.

Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her fami.

, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss’s family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing.

We see Katniss give her little sister a mockingjay pin and say, “As long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you, I promise.” This is significant because the mockingjay is seen as a rebellious symbol to the Capitol. It should also be familiar to fans who’ve read the books, as the symbol graces the cover of “The Hunger Games.” Cinna’s Secret Gift This one relates to the opening scene of the teaser. Just before Katniss is sent up to the arena for the start of the Games, her intuitive stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) pulls out the mockingjay pin that she gave her sister back in District 12 and pins it underneath Katniss’ jacket. It’s a powerful moment, in that it shows how in tune Cinna is with his tribute and that he

I really admire a person like that.
