Bill Meyer sent this email to me, Bob Zwolak, Kamal Rahman, Anam Miah, Hillary Cherry, Cathie Gordon, Abu Mahfuz, City Clerk Ed Norris, Kazi Miah, Mohammed Hassan, Shahab Ahmed, Catrina Stackpoole, and Tom Jankowski:

“I’m forwarding this email because I feel it’s relevant to the Hamtramck recount issue. not on the same scale, Although there was minimal chance for any change in vote counts, the recount process was justified for the same reason Dawud Walid states in this email. “Transparency is the best way to restore the confidence”. And the Hamtramck Muslim community that voted for Alagazali and Anam Miah needed reassurance that there were no errors or possible foul play. This was the main reason, I believe, for the recount, to restore public confidence. I saw the confusion and distrust in Algazali’s after the election, and I know for a fact that that was the main reason Algazali decided to ask for a recount. And I know for a fact that Algazali was misled to think that there would be no cost to the city for the recount. And finally, there are witnesses who confirm that Algazali made an offer publicly to pay for the recount IF THERE WERE NO CHANGE IN VOTES. And he was not obligated to do this anyways. Of course none of this was in the local press.
And contrary to the flimsy research in the Review, there were several mistakes found in the vote count, although the result balanced out to only a few votes different. This should still be a concern for a computer system that is supposed to be flawless. And the potential for computer voting machine fraud in the future is unlimited. However, I feel our Clerk’s office led by Ed Norris is fair and transparent and they did an honorable job during the electoral process, preventing a scene like the one developing in Wayne County as described below.
Now we need to move forward for transparency in all of local government and our local police.

Subject: Free Press editorial re autopsy of Imam

Hi everyone, I think the following editorial calling for the release of autopsy finding in the shooting death of Imam Abdullah is our attention as a reminder to keep monitoring the potentially critical situation. My own take is that where the editorial state “It would be wrong to assume that Dearborn police are trying to cover up something” it would be more accurate to delete “wrong” and “reasonable to be concerned”. Whether the delay in release is laid to to bureaucratic indifference, pressure from agencies outside of the Dearborn Police or good old fashioned racist xenophobia is not yet clear. What is clear though is that Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has it right: “Transparency is the best way to restore the confidence”.
going to write letter to the FP editor thanking them for the fact of taking this stand – which is in fact a gutsy stand for justice in this climate and adding my voice to the urging for letting the finding of facts go forward. Maybe some of you might think about doing so as well.
Carmen and I hope you all are well and will share with us a New Year of peace and care for others.Peace, Mike

    delay release of autopsy truths
    December 27, 2009
    Detroit Free Press EDITORIAL
The Wayne County Medical Office, at the request of Dearborn police, has refused to release an autopsy now on Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah. It should be released immediately.
Delaying the release of this public document until Dearborn police finish their investigation into the Islamic shooting may be illegal. But regardless of the legal issues, the action has just raised questions in the community about a government cover-up. It is poor public policy at a time when openness is needed to restore public confidence. Among some in the Muslim community, Abdullah has already become a
Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad told the Free Press editorial page that his investigation should wrap up in several weeks, and that releasing the autopsy now would create a “great distraction.” That be his call. Government officials typically want to control the flow of information, but democracy work when government trust the people. The FBI is also investigating the shooting, but the federal agency has not requested a delay in releasing the autopsy.
It would be wrong to assume that Dearborn police are trying to cover up something. Dearborn police were not involved in the shooting by federal agents of Abdullah, 53, during a raid at a Dearborn warehouse on Oct. 28. Nor were they involved in building a case against Abdullah. delaying the autopsy creates the same premature rush to judgment that police fear would occur with the immediate release of the autopsy.
Federal agents sought to arrest Abdullah on suspicions that he dealt with stolen goods. Abdullah was shot repeatedly by agents after he shot an unleashed police dog; official maintain that he also fired on agents. His death has raised questions not only about the shooting itself but also broader questions about the use of government informants to infiltrate Muslim groups and mosques.
The death of Abdullah, who was African American and Muslim, has racial and religious especially among a people who have faced excessive police force throughout their history. A recent that the federal government improperly gathered intelligence on the Nation of Islam in 2007 only fuels that skepticism.
“Not releasing the autopsy has led to more suspicions in the community,” said Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations — Michigan. “Transparency is the best way to restore the confidence.”
Wayne County ought to release the autopsy — completed at least two weeks ago — now. family, especially, has a legal and moral right to know. withholding public information simply fuels the worst suspicions and fears.”
